Golden Sundial Pendant, St George & the Dragon, Probaby England. 19th Century.

$0.00

Unusual and clever sundial in the form of a pendant which can be worn as a necklace. The collapsable sundial features a dragon motif, evoking the story of Saint George. An ingenious sundial hides inside a pendant that can be unfolded and set into position. One side features an openwork cast dragon posed underneath a gem-set sun motif and the reverse panel of the piece reads "TEMPUS RERUM IMPERATOR" (Time, The Ruler of Things). The interior “dial” for telling the time is engraved with hours and the signs of the zodiac. A clasped hand, when positioned in the open configuration, acts as the sundials gnomon* , casting a shadow on the “dial” to tell the hour. A very artfully conceived and unique folding design and very well made overall. Being unfamiliar with sundials and their use, I am not sure exactly how to use the device to determine the time. Gemstone untested, appears to be a garnet or ruby. Unmarked. Gold plated bronze.

0.84 x 1.9 x 0.37 in (2.14 x 4.9 x 1 cm)

*Gnomon: the part of a sundial that casts a shadow.
